HRT may be discussed and prescribed if appropriate, but this will depend on your individual symptoms and medical history. Some people may need further information or follow-up before starting treatment.

Can my HRT be changed at this appointment?

Yes, where appropriate. The clinician may adjust your dose, change the type of HRT, or discuss alternative management options depending on your symptoms and medical history.

Do I need any tests before my appointment?

In most cases, no tests are needed beforehand. If any investigations are required, the clinician will discuss this with you during or after your appointment.

Smear Tests

Cervical screening (smear test) appointments are carried out by trained nurses in a supportive and confidential setting.

What is a smear test?

A smear test, also known as cervical screening, checks the health of the cervix. It looks for high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV), which can cause changes to cervical cells. Finding changes early helps prevent cervical cancer.

Who can book a smear test at the Women’s Health Hub?

Smear tests are available for patients who are eligible for routine cervical screening or who are overdue for their test. If you are unsure whether you are eligible, you can contact your usual GP practice who can check your record and advise.

When will I get my results?

Results are usually sent to you by post within a few weeks, and to your registered GP practice. You will be informed if any follow-up is needed.

Contraceptive Coil Clinics

A clinic for coil (IUD) insertion, replacement, or removal. Clinicians will explain the procedure, answer questions, and provide care in a supportive and confidential environment.

How does the coil (IUD) appointment process work?

If you need a coil fitting or a replacement:

Once you submit your referral, you will be added to our waiting list. You will then receive a text with a link to book a telephone counselling appointment with a trained nurse. During this call, the nurse will explain the procedure, answer your questions, and provide guidance to help you make an informed decision. If you decide to go ahead, the nurse will schedule your in-person coil insertion or replacement.

If you need a coil removing (no replacement):

Once you submit your request for a coil removal, you will be added to our waiting list and contacted by phone to book your appointment.

How long will I wait?

Waiting times can vary, but we aim to manage all referrals as promptly as possible. At present, the wait for an appointment may be up to one month, and we appreciate your patience.

How long does the appointment take?

For new fittings and replacements, the pre-appointment telephone assesment takes 15 minutes.

For new coil fittings, replacements and removals the appointment is 30 minutes.

Contraceptive Implant Clinics

This clinic offers appointments for contraceptive implant insertion, replacement, or removal. The implant is a small, flexible device placed under the skin of the upper arm that provides long-acting, reversible contraception.

What is a hormonal implant?

The contraceptive implant is a small plastic rod, around 4 cm long, that a doctor or nurse puts under the skin of your arm. It prevents pregnancy by releasing the hormone progestogen. This stops the ovaries releasing an egg each month. The implant works for 3 years before it needs to be replaced. An implant is over 99% effective if it’s replaced every 3 years.

How is it inserted and removed?

A trained healthcare professional inserts the implant under the skin of your upper arm using a local anaesthetic. Removal is also done by a healthcare professional and usually takes just a few minutes.

How long does the appointment take?

An implant replacement takes 30 minutes. For a new implant fitting or a removal of an implant the appointment takes 15 minutes.
